What will help to keep muscle mass after 40?

I’m 44 and workout every day, alternating with 50 minutes on the elliptical trainer one day and then a combined weights and aerobic workout (highlighting either weights or cardio) on the other days. I’m noticing a loss of muscle tone even with the current routine and have to be so careful about what I eat.
I know part of this is natural aging, but if anyone has any advice for keeping/building muscle I would be thrilled. I don’t really want to add time to the workouts, so maybe a dietary or supplement change?

Keep in mind that once your body hits a level of fitness, it ceases to be a workout, and simply becomes routine. It may be time to step up the routine a little.
