Moms who have breastfed:?

I have a 4 day old and she has been great with breastfeeding so far. I have had to supplement for a day due to jaundice and a weight loss of 7 lbs 12 ounces to 6 lbs 11 ounces, so a whole pound and an ounce. Since then I have gotten my milk in and I have a pediatrician appointment tomorrow so I’m hoping she will say its okay to not supplement with the formula anymore because she doesn’t seem to want to latch on to my nipple as easily Also, I need to pump because my breasts every three hours or so get hard, hurt and full. So I’ve fed her some of my breastmilk in a bottle. I really want to be able to breastfeed and will do anything to be able to. Could it be that she doesn’t like the taste of the Soothies I have on (gel pads on my nipples)…she didn’t mind the Lanolin cream at all. Any advice? I’m afraid she will continue to not like my nipples!

The problem that you are having is not with your breast. Your child is starting to have a nipple preference. She likes the bottle because of how fast it flows out and how much less work she needs to do.
Stop supplementing. Do not give the baby any more bottles. If you or the doctor is concerned about her weight gain have them recheck her weight in 48 hours.
Also in regards to pumping. You need to allow the baby to regulate your milk production. Every time you stimulate your breast by pumping it is sending a message to your body to produce more milk. Stop pumping and just let the baby eat as often as she is hungry (10-12 times in a 24 hour period). If your breast start to hurt really bad you can hand express a small amount of milk. Only a little – just enough to relieve the ‘holy cow, I can’t take it anymore’ feeling.

Edit – if your nipples are ok -then you do not need to use the lanolin or the soothies. You should express some breast milk onto your nipple and then allow it to air dry.
