Excel – HLookup stops working when I go below a certain number?

I’m building a chart for weight loss. On a page for goals, I have one formula to pull the lowest weight achieved using the MIN command on that row, located in cell B5[=MIN('Daily Log'!3:3)]. Then I have HLOOKUP reference B5 and go back to the chart and pull the date associated with that number[=HLOOKUP(B5,'Daily Log'!3:20,18,2)]. The date is on row 18.

The original B row number can be whatever, but HLOOKUP will #N/A at seemingly random times when I put random numbers along the B row. I’ve checked to be sure that there is a date for it to pull.

Ok, update, I got it to work by removing the final ,2 in the HLOOKUP formula, but that was just a random guess. Why did it work?

I agree with Chris somewhat. The fourth argument is a True/False argument. If that argument is True or blank/omitted, then Excel will look for that value or the closest value that is less than that value. When it is set to False, it has to return the exact value. However, you didn’t set the fourth argument to either True or False. That could create an Error situation for the programming supporting the HLOOKUP worksheet function causing it to give you that N/A or Excel could as part of its error handling is assuming that since the argument is filled and it isn’t True or blank, then it automatically assumes a value of False. Even though the date may look the same, it may not be the exact same value. If you are using the NOW() or the TODAY() function or something like that, you have to understand how Excel looks at dates. Excel stores the date as a number. That number, if I remember correctly states the number of days between January 1, 1900 and that date. The number for today (January 24, 2008) is 39471. It also uses that number to keep track of time. So Excel would record noon today as 39471.5. That is because noon is the middle of the day. Excel uses a fraction to keep track of what the current time for the day is. So if you used a date function to get the date. Your date might not have had the exact same date. If I typed today’s date in. It would look at the number as 39471.0. If I used a date function say around 6am, the value Excel would look at for the date would be 39471.25. However due to the formatting they may both look like the same value of 1/24/2008, but really they don’t have exactly the same value due to one is recording the fraction due to the time of day.
