Sugar and weight loss… safest sugar substitute out there?

I recently decided that I HAVE to lose weight.. so i have made some changes already – although i am not seeing any results yet, I am drinking more water and trying to stay near a bathroom lol, cut way down on salt ( used to always salt my food before tasting it), I never drank soda, I cut alcohol out ( used to drink one glass of wine a week), and cut sugar out completely. And this is where I have a problem. I first started using splenda and after 2 weeks , i had horrible cramps and gas, at the time that was the main change, I would use splenda in my coffee, tea and cereal. I checked online and saw a ton of articles and pages on how splenda is a poison to our body..
Do you know of a safe sugar substitute.. I am so miserable without it !!!
