5HTP or L-tryptophan?

Hey,

I am looking into some OTC remedies for depression. These two have been known to increase your levels of Serotonin . I searched online, mainly wikipedia and really cannot come to a decision on which one to choose.

Note: No need to refer me to a doctor/psychiatrist or to recommend prescription drugs. I am mainly looking for information considering these two OTC amino acids (I believe).

Anyways, I am really looking for some great personal experience or knowledge coming from people with more information on these two OTC supplements.

From what ive heard, L-tryptophan is essentially what is in turkey. So it might cause more drowsiness.

While 5HTP sounds more like it is a weight loss supplement. Which always sets off a red light for me. (Cannot stand weight loss supplement scams). But this of course would not be for the weight loss and for the mood effect.

Anyways I am leaning towards 5HTP right now, but am still looking for experience!

5-HTP is considerably more effective than L-Tryptophan. They are both precursors to serotonin but 5-HTP is an immediate precursor whereas L-Tryptophan is, so to speak, two removed. In 18 years practice as a holistic practitioner I have found 5-HTP to be a very valuable supplement with many clients for the purpose you mention. However, I would strongly advise against buying it on the high street as so many of the mass suppliers are inclined to market supplements of very poor quality, to say the least.
Taking into account both quality and economy I would suggest you look up Nutri 5-HTP on Google and you will find a number of online suppliers. Nutri are one of the originators of top quality supplements for practitioners and they put a lot of research into the formulation of their products, but you are highly unlikely to find them in the high street shops. I would recommend their products without hesitation.
