No Weight Loss On Atkins Diet

Anovulation & Weight Loss?

Hello everyone! My bf and I have been trying to conceive since Oct 2009 (also I have had no periods since 0ct 2009). Well with no luck, I decided to go see a doctor. I recently (July 2010) was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Once I took medication, I started my period and ovulated but that was short lived and only happened for one month. Well, I went to the doctor on Oct 27, 2010 and he diagnosed me with anovulation. He told me to lose 5% (15 lbs) of my body weight and I should start my cycles again. Well, I have been on the Atkins diet since Oct 27, 2010 and I lost 15 pounds. I started my period yesterday. However, it is really dark brown and barely gets any on my pad. Is this normal? Will I start to ovulate again? Is this actually a period? Sorry for all the questions but I am nervous and excited!

We’ve got several things going on here. Hypothyroidism can cause you to not have a period. It’s possible that even with supplementation, your thyroid is still low. Some docs don’t give you enough thyroid hormone. It’s very bad to get pregnant if you don’t have adequate thyroid hormone. So make sure that’s all set. Then, that’s great that you lost some weight. That will hopefully also make you more fertile. Don’t worry about the period being dark brown just yet. Honestly, I think you shold just make sure your thyroid is OK, as that likely has more to do with your weight and with anovulation. All “anovulation” means is “you’re not getting a period.” It’s not the diagnosis of a disease, but rather just the name of a symptom.
