Hypothyroid diagnosis and Synthroid?

I am 26 years old, and I had a miscarriage last month for what would have been my first pregnancy at about 6 weeks. My ob/gyn ran some blood work this week, and my TSH level was 6.5. My family doctor said it is twice the number it was in September, and that I am now hypothyroid. The symptoms I have had are fatigue, about 10 pounds unexplained weight gain, muscle aches, and dry hair. My doc put me on 50 mg of Synthroid daily. He will rerun the blood work in six weeks. I was concerned about weight gain from the medicine, and he guaranteed me that when taken correctly it would actually have the opposite effect and would instead raise my metabolism and spur on some weight loss.
Do you have any experience with hyothyroid and Synthroid? This is all new to me…I have done tons of research on the internet but am getting a lot of contradictory statements. I would prefer some meaningful first-person anecdotes/experience.

I have been hypothyroid since after the birth of my daughter 21 years ago.
I had the same symptoms you have now (very tired, some weight gain, dry hair, slow growth of hair, very dry skin).

I started on Synthroid (the generic name is levothyroxine) and my TSH level returned to the normal range. A normal range for TSH is about 1.0 to 5.5 in most thyroid tests. My symptoms all got better.

You should never skip a dose, since it has to be taken daily to keep your thyroid functioning properly. You’ve probably already read that thyroid hormone has a big impact on your body’s metabolism in general. If you take too much Syntheroid (where your TSH levels are below 1.0), you may feel anxious (that happened to me when my doctor was adjusting my dose upward about 5 years ago.

As for affects on pregnancy and future children, as long as you take the Syntheroid, you should be able to have a typical pregnancy.
It is now known that UNtreated hypothyroidism can affect the developing child in that it can raises the risk of birth defects (see study from a trustworthy source listed below).
