Any Tips for Teenage Weight Loss?

Hi, my name is Veronica and I am 14 years old. I don’t know how much I weigh(i’m assuming around the 150-175lbs range, sadly), but I know that I need to lose some. I’m so sick of looking this way, tired of having these ugly flabby arms along with a larger-than-average tummy. We live by the school’s track, but i’m embarrassed to go there because I think some kids will see me (Let’s face it, teenagers are mean :| ) and make fun of me. I know that I need to eat better and healthier, along with exercise, but that’s kind of hard when you’re a kid, huh? Tips, tricks, advice, and encouragement is greatly needed. Please, don’t respond with obnoxious/spiteful answers. I’m just trying to improve my life. :D

Hi Veronica, sounds like you’re on your way to a healthier lifestyle. You’ve reached that first step of motivation, good for you! Since walking at the track might not be the most comfortable situation for you, how about just walking in your neighborhood? Or is there somewhere else you can walk where people wouldn’t necessarily “know” you. Start off slowly and work up to longer distances and faster paces. See if you can get your parents to get you a pedometer. They have ones that aren’t too expensive. That way you can see how many steps you take. Each time you go for a walk, see if you can get a few more steps more in. Set some goals for your walks. It’s recommended that young people have a minimum of 60-minutes of physical activity a day.

Also, start down a path of eating healthy. Make healthy food choices. DO NOT starve yourself. Eat more fruit (but not too much: 1-2 pieces a day), vegetables, drink skim milk (you need the calcium and good source of protein), non-”white” carbohydrates (whole grains). Make sure it says “whole” in the ingredients. Stay away from fruit juices (very high in sugar and calories), sodas (diet soda are not good for you either).
