Causes Of Weight Loss In Dogs
What is a safe way to help a senior dog lose weight?
I have a 14 year old Chihuahua/Beagle who I believe is in need of some weight loss. When I adopted her four years ago she was only 8lbs, and now she is around 13-14lbs. I believe her weight is beginning to cause problems with her joints even. What is a safe way to help her lose some weight?
I take her on two walks a day, and feed her 3 times a day. I also play with her several times through out the day inside the house.
Have a vet check up first. They will screen for glandular and other medical problems that could be causing weight gain.
then look at the amount of food you feed, the amount of exercise, and the overall lifestyle she has.
3 times a day is a lot. How much food do you give her per feeding?
I feed my dogs twice a day.
how long of walks do you take her on? she needs a minimum of 30-45 minutes daily, consistently.
if her joints are bothering her, try swim therapy. less stress on joints and bones.
or a treadmill.
cut down or eliminate treats for a while.
check the quality of her food, perhaps go for a food that is for overweight dogs.
but the vet check is first recommended.
