I’m going to work out, should I eat something first?

I’m 20 years old and 60lbs overweight (OUCH!!). I’m on a longgg journey to weight loss. I’ve joined a weight loss program (weight watchers) and I know that I’m headed in the right direction!

I’ve also joined a gym. I am going to leave in about 1 hour to go workout (some cardio today, tredmil, eliptical).

At about 9am (2 hours ago) I ate 4oz of regular yogurt.

Should I eat something more before my workout? I plan on doing 1/2 hour on the tredmil and 1/2 hour on the eliptical (a 1 hour workout)
Or should I wait until I get home to eat something?

OR should I eat before AND after??

All these questions!! I just want to do the right thing to benefit most from my workout.

I like to have a semi-light snack about an hour before working out. For one, it keeps some people from feeling nausea due to not eating. But it also helps your body to have enough energy for the workout.

Secondly, don’t eat a meal that is too big…as it takes hours to digest. You don’t want the blood in your intestines/stomach for digesting if you can help it; you want all the blood you can get, delivering oxygen to your muscles you are working out.

Also, a light snack will help keep that ‘hungry’ feeling away. Sometimes I’ve tried to work out without food recently. Your body feels drained of energy, and you lose your motivation for continuing the workout.

You should eat something before and after the workout. Something high in protein before is definitely good…as your muscles need the protein and have access to it at the time you are working out. After…because your muscles need to recover and it does take protein to help build/repair whatever muscles you used. Whey protein shakes are good after a workout, as well as before. It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the body to absorb whey protein before/after a workout. I actually drink a protein shake after a workout…then eat something high in protein about 30 to 45 minutes after. That way you keep your body supplied with necessary nutrients and energy to recover from the workout.
